One film that solidifies Manchester’s place as integral, both to the film industry, and the music industry, is Michael Winterbottom’s 24 Hour Party People. This film is a comedic adaptation of Anthony H Wilson, the part owner of Factory Records, and his influence in helping create the “Madchester” scene of the late 80s, early 90s.

‘Moneyball’ is a true story that breaks the mould of the typical baseball movie as it avoids artificial game sequences and uses real footage for the most part instead. It is based on baseball manager Billy Beane’s struggle to bring his Oakland team into the Major League in 2002. It’s still a great movie with plenty of surprises up its sleeve even for those not au fait with the rules of baseball.
Nick Hasted praised the DVD release of the assured Oscar-winning thriller ‘The Secret in Their Eyes’ that squares up to Argentina’s dark past. Kieron Tyler flagged up the release of the ‘Theo Angelopoulos Collection’, which brings together four of the Greek director’s unique films.
