Manchester is an incredibly important city. It is the jewel of the North West of England, and has a well earned reputation as one of the UK’s centres of economy and culture. More recently, there have been many hit block busters that have, at least, had some of their scenes shot in Manchester. Captain America, released last year, has the infamous Marvel super hero chase someone through the streets of Manchester. Another claim to fame is Alfie, staring Jude Law, which was filmed in Manchester’s ‘Northern Quarter’ to simulate a New York setting.
One film that solidifies Manchester’s place as integral, both to the film industry, and the music industry, is Michael Winterbottom’s 24 Hour Party People. This film is a comedic adaptation of Anthony H Wilson, the part owner of Factory Records, and his influence in helping create the “Madchester” scene of the late 80s, early 90s.
