So you want to watch the wrestler online
When you start to watch the wrestler online you have a film about a washed up wrestler (like the ones in the wwe) called Randy The Ram Robinson who was at the peak of his fame in the late 1980s. He now sees his career turned upside down and living in retirement for the past twenty years. Mickey Rourke plays the part of Randy giving this character a masterful performance.
Being out of the limelight for so long gives Randy the chance to rekindle relationships which soured while he was so busy with his fame. And so, while still doing wrestling performances in front of small crowds, we see him try to rekindle the lost bond with his estranged daughter (Evan Rachel Wood), as well as witnessing a blossoming romance with a stripper played by Marisa Tomei.
Even so Randy’s real ambition is to still be able to perform in front of many adoring fans. This causes him much chagrin that changes him into a depressed forlorn figure. The fact is that a heart attack in a routine match forced this retirement upon him making him tackle life from a different perspective and hence why he rebuilds his relationships to make up perhaps for the adoration he was getting from his fans? Even so the film portrays this in a moving and joyful way giving us hope that even when we lose something we love there will always be something else to replace it. Or at least that is the message I got from it.
While we see this conflict as we watch the wrestler online we also get a glimpse in the world of pro wrestler. Far from the bitter rivalries usually associated with this sport, the director shows us that actually they all get on very well and look out for each other. This in sharp contrast to the image of bitter feuds and rivalry normally associated with wrestling.
The film director, Darren Aronofsky, masterfully portrays Randy as the deflated here who in a flash more or less loses everything and how this takes him down a spiral of desperation.
We then move from this gloom to great triumph and joy, as Randy finally makes his comeback to the ring. This is made even sweeter by the fact that now he has a loving daughter and loving woman at his side, something he did not have in his previous hey day. All this is accompanied by a great rock tracks with tracks written by Bruce Springsteen and Axl Rose with the music of Guns And Roses prominent as Randy is portrayed as a great fan of theirs.
While we watch the wrestler online we see moments of high drama with that of sadness and then ones of great happiness. This is a film for which Mickey Rourke is a leading contender for winning the Oscar and few can say that he does not deserve it.
