Local Music Festivals Across the Country
Local music fests have been popping up all over the country for years now. There are many prominent music festivals out there. If you’re group who hope to one day lock down a record deal with a major label, music festivals like SXSW can be a big step in the right direction for you. Festivals that give unsigned bands and artists the chance to play in front of huge crowds definitely deserve some attention, from both music lovers and local bands themselves. More importantly, these local bands should try to play festivals like these where someone from or working with a record label is in attendance.
Concert production companies, like Gorilla Music, promote a number of local music fests all over the country every single year. Some of the most recent cities that they’re held these events in include Kansas City, Dallas, and Cleveland. Gorilla Music usually brings in record label scouts and A&R representatives to each of these events.
At the Cleveland Music Festival last year, representative Jeff Blue discovered guitarist Lance Dowdle from a local group called DNA. In the past, Jeff was responsible for discovering Linkin Park, and with his help, Dowdle signed to Atlantic Records. He now plays in the band, Emphatic. This is just one example of how playing at a music festival can really put your band on the fast track to being discovered.
Local music festivals usually draw extremely large audiences, giving bands the chance to play in front of more people than they possibly ever had before. That being the case, shows like these also give bands an opportunity to network with more bands and potential fans than they would at a regular concert. It also gives bands a chance to sell merchandise, like T-Shirts or CDs, since there are so many people.
As local music fests grow in popularity and more companies continue to hold these events, we will see more groups getting deals from these types of events. It’s good to see local communities working together for the good of their artists. Let’s hope even more companies get involved and start to support local groups and promote events like these.
