Author-director Schepisi informs his tale with nearly documentary like actuality, eloquently assaulting the format of trial by story that made Chamberlain and her spouse the most maligned couple in Australia. Streep and Neill are heartbreakingly excellent. Cast includes Meryl Streep, Sam Neill, Bruce Myles, Charles Tingwell, Notch Tate, and Lewis Fitzgerald. (121 minutes, 1988)
The Muse: Brooks plays a Hollywood screenwriter who’s informed that he’s out of touch until he hooks up with a genuine muse Rock, a capricious lady whose performing methods are unorthodox at best. As with tons of Brooks’ films, the parts are better than the entire thing, although his gibes at Hollywood are valuable, and some of the cameo appearances which we come observe are extremely funny. Cast includes Albert Brooks, Sharon Rock, Andie MacDowell, Jeff Bridges, Mark Feuerstein, Steven Wright, and Bradley Whitford. (96 minutes, 1999)
Across the Bridge: Scotland Yard is closing in on a German business man who is involved with some illegal deals. He goes on the run, and tries to enter the US by way of Mexico. To pull this off he tries to switch identities with another passenger on his way. Stars include Rod Steiger, David Knight, and Maria Landi. (1957 British-Drama)
Believe in Me: Donovan moves to a tiny Oklahoma town in 1964 to take a teaching job, although when he arrives he learns he’s been assigned to coach the girls basketball team. What’s more, the girls have no self respect and little help from the school. Genuine heartland tale ascends above its recognizable underdog recipe. Donovan and Mathis as his supportive spouse are first rate. Cast includes Jeffrey Donovan, Samantha Mathis, Bruce Dem, Bob Gunton, Heather Matarazzo, Alicia Lagano, and Chris Ellis. Born On The Fourth Of July: A true story that chronicles the life of Ron Kovic. A volunteer in the army, Ron does a tour in Vietnam, where he suffers injuries that leave him paralyzed. After his disturbing treatment by the government, and harrowing experiences in VA hospitals, Ron becomes an anti war activist. He feels completely betrayed by the country that he fought for.
