What could you buy for $10 a month in 1923? That was the amount paid for the rental of the little office in Los Angeles where Walt Disney and his brother, Roy started what is known today as the Walt Disney Company. This company began with animated films which were called ALICE COMEDIES. After only four months, a move was made to a larger space where the name of the company became Disney Brothers Studio.
Only a year later, a lot was bought in the Silver Lake district and a new studio was underway. In 1928 our beloved mouse was born. Following Mickey were Pluto, Goofy, Donald Duck, and the many more Disney favorites everyone has come to love. With the Disney characters becoming more popular every day, a place to build the many props that were required for the Disney family became essential. The Back Lot became that place. The shops were built to produce the many different crafts that were a much needed part of the live productions.
Among the edifices on the Back Lot were those used for plumbing, electrical, plaster shops, and storehouses for thousands of props. A lot of the plaster figures that are used in Disneyland and Walt Disney World were made here. With the need for complete buildings rather than just the bits and pieces of earlier times, the filming industry began to build whole sets in response to the popularity of location filming. Over the last 30 plus years the back lot has housed the sets for many movies including “Darby O’Gill and the Little People,” “The Love Bug,” “The Apple Dumpling Gang,” and “Those Calloways” among others.

One of the most lucrative companies over the last century has been Disney. Since the early 1900s they have been captivating audiences and reminding everyone that it’s nice to dream. The success of the movie studios is only rivaled by that of its theme parks. All in all, Disney is a global wonder, with amusement parks all over the world and annual revenue of over $35 billion.
The triumph of Disney can be traced back to a single man – Walter Elias Disney. From his early days growing up in Missouri, he always had an palpable spark that separated him from the rest. Disney wanted to entertain others through a relatively new form of cinema called animation. He originally got started in the Kansas City area. Disney and a friend talked a local theater owner into letting them make cartoons to play at the beginning of his movies. It became a success and Disney and his partner, Ub Iwerks, started their own studio in Hollywood. After a few years of short projects, Disney and Iwerks came across a hit with their character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. He was a huge commercial success and grew the Disney Company’s resources. However, Disney didn’t own the rights to Oswald and Universal Studios took over. They hired away most of his staff and claimed the character as their own.
Soon after this, Disney and Iwerks created the most recognizable animated character of all-time. Mickey Mouse helped launch the Disney empire. It wasn’t long before there were several spin-offs of all of the Disney characters. Pluto, Goofy, and Donald Duck all had their own cartoons. Donald Duck, known for his explosive temper and duck voice was their second most popular character. He helped Disney grow through World War II and secured Disney’s popularity.
After Disney’s extraordinary success with short cartoons and films, he decided to open a theme park. He got the idea after receiving a flood of letters requesting tours of the studio. Instead of letting them tour the studio he came up with the idea of Disneyland. He purchased 160 acres of orange groves in Anaheim, California and built his dream. The first day of Disneyland was a grand event in American history. So many people wanted to get in, that they flooded the park. Even though only 11,000 tickets were printed for members of the media, over 28,000 people got into the park using bogus tickets. That day will always live in infamy in Disney lore as “Black Sunday.” Once the initial complications were taken care of, Disneyland went on to be a smashing success. After Disneyland was completed, Walt came up with the idea for an even larger park, which became Disney World. Disney World is still the number one vacation destination in the United States with Disneyland coming in second.

Some of the most influential movies ever made have been made by Disney Studios. Anyone can single out at least one Disney movies he or she remembers fondly. While Disney was a pioneer in the industry, their commercial success with new movies lagged a little bit in the 1980′s. In the late 1980′s and the 1990′s Disney shook up their company and revived its animation success. This period was known as the Disney Renaissance. Disney released several movies during this time period that were critically and commercially successful. All but one of the movies was nominated for an Academy Award and arguably, the most successful all of them was The Lion King.
The Lion King became the most successful animated movie of all time when it was released in 1994. Although it was later beat out by the computer animated Finding Nemo, it remains the highest grossing traditionally animated movie ever with sales of over $300 million. It has even spawned several smaller budget sequels including The Lion King II and The Lion King 1 1/2. It features several musical numbers and even features original music by Elton John.
The Lion King is based on a touching story about the life of a lion named Simba. Other characters involved in the movie are his father Mufasa, a monkey named Rafiki and his sidekicks Timon and Pumba. The movie has several moments of comedy and weaves them into a serious drama along the way. The story begins with the birth of the prince of the Pride Land, Simba. His father, Mufasa, is the king of the land. Mufasa’s brother, Scar, is jealous of Simba and plots to eliminate him so that he is next in line to the throne. Scar tries to have him killed by his associates, the hyenas.
Later in the movie, Scar actually kills his brother Mufasa. This actually leaves Simba as the king of the prideland. However, since he is still very young, he fears that Scar will attempt to kill him as well. He flees the country and is met by a meerkat named Timon and a warthog named Pumba. His friends help boost his morale and he eventually goes back to the Pride Land to reclaim his rightful place on the throne. The movie culminates in a dramatic battle between Simba and Scar. He then rekindles his previous love with Nala and they have a cub of their own.
Over the years, the Lion King has endured as a Disney classic. A new generation has grown to love the characters and it has remained one of the best selling DVD’s in the Disney Vault. An irascible car, Herbie was unleashed on American audiences in 1969′s “The Love Bug.” Enjoying a mind of his own, Herbie can drive himself. Most of the time, Herbie is shown as a grayish-white Beetle with red, white and blue stripes running from the front bumper to the back, and has a large number “53″ on his engine lid, hood and doors. The exception to this is when he first shows up in The Love Bug. Then, Herbie is a non-descript grayish-white Beetle with a gray sunroof. The sunroof suggests that Herbie is a 1963 model. In the movie, Herbie is named after the uncle of a mechanic.
The popularity of this lovable bug prompted a number of other movies. These include the 1974 Herbie Rides Again, 1977 Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo, 1980 Herbie Goes Bananas, a made for television movie in 1997 with the same name as the original film, and most recently Herbie: Fully Loaded in 2005. According to the story between the films, Herbie has been passed around between a number of owners. Herbie also starred in his own television series in the early 1980s. Of course, there were only five episodes, which aired in 1982, but they had a huge impact on audience.
Herbie has kept his distinctive look through all his appearances. In the 1997 television movie and recent film, Herbie: Fully Loaded, however, Herbie underwent some changes, including the type face and placement of the number 53. It remains an older style Beetle, however, and has not been replaced by a new Bug, which some had feared. Between even the earlier movies, there are slight changes. For instance, the stripes in the 1969 film are different than those in later movies.
Over the course of his history, Herbie’s worked alongside a wide range of human stars, including Don Knotts, Buddy Hackett, Helen Hayes, Lindsay Lohan, Michael Keaton and Matt Dillon. There have been many different vehicles sporting the name, too. Over the course of the most recent movie, Herbie appeared in four different roles: as Junk Yard Herbie, Demolition Derby Herbie, Tricked Out Herbie, and NASCAR Herbie. Thirty eight different Volkswagen Beetles were used over the course of this movie. In the NASCAR racing scenes, some of these cars got up to over one hundred thirty miles per hour.

Located in Death Valley is a castle that was built as a vacation retreat for Albert Mussey Johnson and his wife. Stories told how the castle was built with money earned from a gold mine that he had invested in in the 20′s. Actually, there was no gold mine and his investment was in a dream but out of it he did build his vacation retreat.
When you get investors for a mining project you really should have a mine. Walter Scott had gotten Mr. Johnson to invest in the mine that was supposedly going to make them both rich. It was working for Mr. Scott until Mr. Johnson decided to come and see the mine for himself. With no mine to see it was impossible for him to get too excited about the mine.
Mr. Johnson and his wife liked Walter Scott, even after the knowledge that there was no mine. Mr. Johnson became enamored by Death Valley and with the encouragement of his wife built a vacation retreat. Although the retreat was actually named Death Valley Ranch it became known as Scotty’s Castle.
The rich and famous came to the retreat when it became a tourist attraction. They wanted to see the retreat built by one of California’s richest gold miners. Of course, had he told that it wasn’t from the riches gained from the non-existent mine there wouldn’t have been nearly the attraction to it that there was at the time.
There are guided tours available at the castle for those of you wanting to visit. With interactive displays, living history exhibits and all inside the house it will be a treat to see. The tours are available daily on the hour.
Underground tours are offered at the castle too. You will see the Pelton Water Wheel that furnished the castle with electricity at the time of construction. You will also be able to take the 1/4 mile tunnel walk to see what other surprises are there that make the castle special.
Thanks for the National Park Service the castle is maintained for people to visit. Technology from the past and present are both used in the lower level of the castle to keep it functioning as it should. You will enjoy the tour and the history of the castle.

If you’re in the market for a new television on a tight budget, it’s all about TV flat screens. I just picked up my first TV flat screen, and it’s rather amazing what a difference it has made. Even though it is basically the same tube technology as the ones I have been using all my life, TV flat screens provide a noticeably superior picture quality. As an added bonus, they just kind of look cool too; sleeker and more modern looking.

Perhaps I had been living in a box the last few years when it comes to technology in regards to television pictures, because I had hardly heard of all these advances. The LCD and plasma TVs have an amazing picture quality and are so thin and light, but they also come with a hefty price tag. After assuring the salesperson that I could in no way afford the price tag he showed me what came before these new models, the flat screen TV. These models are built like a regular tube TV, but with a flat front instead of a curved screen which markedly improves picture quality.

I bought my last TV at Costco and am quite happy with it. Actually, it was quite a coincidence that I happened to stroll through the electronics department which I normally don’t go through and I saw a model that was bigger than my normal TV and was on sale for a great price. Since I had recently noticed that my old TV was starting to go I thought that it was probably a good time to pick up a new one.
So if you are thinking about getting a new TV or even if you’re not, take a look at the new flat screen TVs. You’ll get a great picture without having to shell out top dollar for a plasma or LCD set.
